Why join the gym when you can get a brisk walk, and some good-for-you health information from medical professionals, at the local mall?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention thinks it’s a good idea: In 2015, it released a how-to guide for malls to encourage walking programs. Hartford HealthCare knows the drill. For four years, its “Walk to Wellness” program at Westfarms mall in West Hartford has combined a healthful walk with talks on everything from nutrition and diabetes to living wills and advance directives.
Why a mall? It’s safe, comfortable, spacious and it never rains or snows. The CDC’s “Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans” recommends adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week. Plan on a moderate-intensity work out when you start knocking off your 150 minutes with “Walk to Wellness” at Westfarms.
