Connecticut, despite this week reaching 10,000 COVID-related deaths during the pandemic, continues to move into a new stage of the public health crisis as Omicron cases decline.
“You can tell that we’ve already shifted to living with COVID by our setup of the COVID outpatient triage clinic,” says Dr. Ulysses Wu, Hartford HealthCare’s System Director of Infection Disease and Chief Epidemiologist. “We’re shifting the battle from the inpatient to the outpatient world.”
Connecticut now has one of the nation’s 10 lowest seven-day test positivity averages, at 15.5 percent, according to data provided by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. The data, updated Feb. 2 at 6 a.m., is more a measure of testing in each state than the prevalence of the Omicron variant. (Kansas, as an example, has one of the lowest test rates, with about 158 tests per 100,000 people.) Yet the test-positivity numbers below, broken down by seven-day rolling averages for each reporting state and the District of Columbia, add some perspective to Omicron’s movement.
“We do know that other parts of the country are still experiencing some surges,” says Dr. Wu, “and deaths do, unfortunately, remain high not just in the state of Connecticut but also across the country.”
The state’s daily positivity rate was 7.43 percent on Feb. 2, down from 8.68 percent the previous day. Positivity rates, ideally, should remain under 5 percent, according to the World Health Organization.
