Even the pouring rain couldn’t keep away the more than 300 children and caregivers from the 14th annual Backus Safety Camp.  Organized by the Backus Trauma and EMS Departments and American Ambulance, Safety Camp gives children and their families an opportunity to learn about safety in a fun environment. Children toured emergency vehicles and learned  how they work.

Safety lessons included precautions when around water, electricity, fire, the use of 911 and more.  A special thanks to the following community partners whose support helped to make this event possible:  Bubbles to Butterfly, Prime Electric, Norwich Public Utilities, Norwich Rotary and Harp and Dragon who generously sponsored the broadcast for WCTY.

Two Navy midshipmen dressed up as crash test dummies were a huge hit with the kids and for the second year in a row the Navy provided more than 20 volunteer midshipmen to help with everything from setting up tables to fitting kids with helmets. Also volunteering with staff and equipment were East Great Plains Fire Dept., Norwich City Fire Dept., Laurel Hill Fire Dept., Lisbon Fire Dept., Bozrah Volunteer Fire Company , Occum Fire Dept., Taftville Volunteer Fire Dept., American Ambulance and the Connecticut State Police. The Connecticut National Guard was there with an ambulance.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this community event a success.
