On April 3, 2017, MidState Medical Center opened its Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute, bringing together doctors from the region’s most respected orthopaedic practices providing the highest level of care for patients in need of joint replacement and care of other bone injuries and disorders to create a comprehensive orthopaedic service for the region.
In the past year, more than 2,300 patients have been treated at the institute. The average length-of-stay is 1.2 days for surgical patients, down from 2.9 days a year ago, meaning that patients are going home sooner with fewer complications. Most patients – 96 percent – are able to go straight home from the hospital, avoiding a stay in a rehabilitation center and the readmission rate is only one percent. That indicates patients are healing well after they go home. The institute exceeds national averages on all of these important measures of safety and care quality.
On a national survey, patients report overwhelming satisfaction with their experience at Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute, with 99 percent saying they are likely to recommend the institute to a friend.
So, what is the secret?
“We are providing a value-driven, comprehensive care model in which we take the patient from the moment they are booked for surgery to help them receive the best possible outcome,” said Andrew Turczak, Director of Operations at the Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute at MidState.
Turczak said the institute’s features – including valet parking, private rooms, a private kitchen, renovated floors, and state-of-the-art technology, including a text-messaging system for visitors – make it popular with patients.
The institute is home to 44 orthopaedic surgeons from Comprehensive Orthopaedics, Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists, and Middlesex Orthopaedics, respected practices in the region. In addition, every nurse, physician assistant and operating room staff member is specially trained in orthopaedics. After surgery, nurse navigators check on patients’ progress, starting three days after the operation and continuing for up to a year.
For patients, preoperative classes are offered in person and online, making it convenient for busy professionals. Classes in preparing for discharge and the transition to home also are offered. The institute also offers a preadmission center, a one-stop location where patients can have all of the preoperative evaluations needed to clear them for surgery.
