It was over a year ago that our physicians and leaders had a vision for building a comprehensive system-wide service line for neurosciences. Today, that vision is a reality, and just recently, nearly 100 providers and staff members attended an inaugural networking event to celebrate the progress and achievements of the newly formed Hartford HealthCare Neuroscience Institute.

The event, held Sept. 27 at Heublein Hall, presented an opportunity to engage our colleagues in this great work, network with each other and build relationships, and hear about our vision for fiscal year 2017.

Those who attended the event heard presentations from Hartford HealthCare’s President and Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Flaks and Neuroscience Institute Vice President Wendy Elberth.

Flaks discussed the benefits of the Institute Model, noting the ability to standardize care, align our physicians, and provide more coordinated care to patients. The Institute Model is being deployed across Hartford HealthCare in all of our major service lines.

During the event, Elberth highlighted several achievements throughout the past year, notably:

  • — Appointing Dr. Mark J. Alberts as the first physician-in-chief of the Hartford HealthCare Neuroscience Institute
  • — Launching a destination Hartford Healthcare Headache Center, led by physician Dr. Brian Grosberg
  • — Establishing the highly specialized Hartford HealthCare Movement Disorders Center, led by Dr. Joy Antonelle DeMarcaida and Dr. Duarte Machado
  • — Creating a dedicated Stroke Council to develop standards of care across our system

Fiscal year 2017 promises to be full of many more achievements. Several key initiatives are slated for implementation, including establishing an Executive Committee and Research Council; creating a Nurse Navigation Program for stroke patients; integrating telehealth services as part of a pilot program for the Headache Center; and implementing our Clinical Councils.

“We could not have established and grown the Neuroscience Institute without the hard work and commitment of everyone in this room,” said Elberth. “I extend my thanks and appreciation to all of our providers, as well as members of my team, who were instrumental in this process. We have an even greater need to get to know each other, and this event helped us accomplish that.”
