Here’s how to age gracefully.

So what can you do to age gracefully? Here are some tips to get you thinking.

  1. Go back to school. Refocus your career, build on your skill set, or delve into an entirely new area. If you choose an area you’re truly passionate about, juggling the responsibilities of adult life won’t feel as overwhelming.
  2. Vacation to help others. Take advantage of the chance to give back and experience a different lifestyle by taking a mission trip instead of a self-indulgent vacation.
  3. Review your financial plan. Now is a good time to reevaluate your financial goals and ensure they align with your future plans. Make adjustments to your investments so you know you’re headed in the right direction.
  4. Get moving. Adults who engage in regular physical activity are 60% less likely to develop dementia. Exercise increases oxygen to the brain and releases a protein that strengthens cells and neurons. An activity like dancing, for example, involves both exercise and brain activity, such as learning and memory.
  5. Take a trip. Even if it’s not a volunteer vacation, make a point to travel. Travel allows us to engage all of our senses — like seeing new sights and tasting new foods — exhilarating experiences that can help to reduce stress and give us a new appreciation for life.
  6. Find a hobby. Try a new sport or pick up a hobby like playing the piano or painting. Learning something new keeps our mind working and active.
  7. Eat fresh. Make a commitment to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Seek out local farms and buy local produce.
  8. Skip processed foods when you can and make a point to eat meals made from scratch.

Of course the key to aging gracefully is not just reading about it. Pick one tip off this list and make it a goal to implement this year.
