Patients with movement disorders in Eastern Connecticut now have a choice for comprehensive, specialized treatment close to home.
Earlier this month, the Hartford HealthCare Chase Family Movement Disorders Center opened a new office at the Hartford HealthCare Health Center at in Plainfield. Along with the addition of the Plainfield facility, the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center—part of the Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute— has offices with movement disorder specialists throughout the state located in Vernon, Meriden and Cheshire.
The Centers offer a personal and compassionate multidisciplinary approach to address the unique needs of individuals with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, tremors, dystonia, gait disorders, Huntington’s disease, Tourette syndrome among others.
“It is an honor for me to be part of this amazing team. The treatment of patients with movement disorders in a specialized center like ours, really makes a big difference in patients’ lives,” said neurologist Maria Moro-de-Casillas, who is now seeing patients at the Plainfield and Vernon locations.
Through the Center, patients are integrated into a highly specialized team of movement disorders neurologists, a neurosurgeon, neuropsychiatrist, physiatrist, neuropsychologist, research and clinical nurses, a social worker, physical, speech and occupational therapists, and integrative medicine providers, to help address the numerous challenges this complex group of conditions bring, said Dr. Moro-de-Casillas.
Dr. Moro-de-Casillas says the field of Movement Disorders has made great strides in the past 20 years, not only in advancements in the pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, and the use of deep brain stimulation [offered by specialized neurosurgeons at the Ayer Neuroscience Institute at Harford Hospital], but also in better understanding the complex pathophysiology of these conditions.
