Each year the Lewis Mills High School Girls’ Volleyball Team comes together for a very special cause — to help raise awareness and money for the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Pink Rose Breast Cancer Fund.
In 2019, members of the team, led by co-captains Jordyn Mashia and Hope Maher, helped raise $1,425 in donations at their annual Dig Pink fundraiser last fall.
“The overwhelming support and generosity we have received from the volleyball team and their supporters at Lewis Mills is so gratifying to all of us,” said Tammy Rouleau, the CHH Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator. “Their donation will directly help women access lifesaving early detection services and provide funds to purchase post-surgical garments and wigs that make breast cancer recovery easier.”
The fund provides financial support for educational outreach and screening to assure that women in northwest Connecticut have comprehensive, coordinated access to services related to breast cancer prevention and treatment. It was established at CHH in 1998 to provide free mammograms and other diagnostic services to women in our region who are uninsured or underinsured.
The purpose of the program is to ensure that ALL women in our community have access to regular mammograms. Early detection through mammography has been found to be the safest and most effective way of finding breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
