It isn’t just a festive flavor for the holidays or a garnish for your favorite drink – peppermint also packs a punch when it comes to health benefits.
From soothing your stomach to boosting your brainpower, here are five reasons to make peppermint a staple in your diet.

Start here1. Digestive health.
If a cup of peppermint tea is your go-to after a heavy meal, you’re not alone. Peppermint is well-known for its ability to ease gas, bloating and indigestion.
“Peppermint helps relax the muscles in your stomach, which in turn reduces discomfort,” says Cassandra Neal, RDN, a registered dietitian with Hartford HealthCare Medical Group in Glastonbury. “It’s also known to stimulate bile flow, which helps to break down fats.”
But peppermint isn’t for everyone.
“If you have GERD, acid reflux or chronic gallbladder issues, peppermint can worsen your symptoms. It can also interact with certain medications, so be sure to check with your doctor before using it.”
Otherwise, a warm cup of peppermint tea might be just what the doctor ordered.

2. Headache relief.
Have a headache that just won’t quit? Peppermint might be the answer.
Applying peppermint oil to your forehead has long been found to help relieve tension headaches.
“The cooling sensation of peppermint can help improve blood flow and relax tight muscles, which can help ease headache symptoms,” says Neal.
Try keeping a small bottle of peppermint oil in your bag for quick relief – just a dab on your temples can make all the difference.

3. Menstrual cramps.
If cramps are ruining your week once a month, peppermint can help take the edge off.
“The menthol in peppermint acts as a natural muscle relaxer, which can sooth your cramps,” says Neal. “It’s a simple, natural way to find some relief.”
Try drinking peppermint tea, taking peppermint oil capsules or applying diluted peppermint oil topically to your abdomen.

4. Reduce skin irritation.
If your skin is itchy and irritated all winter, peppermint can help.
“Using peppermint-based products or diluted peppermint oil can provide instant relief to irritated skin,” says Neal.
Whether you’re dealing with eczema, insect bites or a rash, peppermint can help calm the area and reduce redness.
“I always suggest doing a patch test first to ensure your skin won’t react to the oil,” says Neal. “If the peppermint oil is not diluted properly, it can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.”
Just avoid applying peppermint oil near your eyes or broken skin.
5. Cognitive function.
Need to stay sharp for a big meeting? Some studies suggest that the scent of peppermint can improve focus, memory and alertness.
“We still need more research in this area, but some studies have found that the presence of menthol in peppermint can stimulate brain function,” says Neal. “If you need a refreshing pick-me-up, try keeping a diffuser with peppermint oil nearby.”
