In an ongoing effort to increase the options people in the area have for orthopedic care, Windham Hospital announces the expansion of the orthopedic practice at its Family Health Center.

The Center for Bone and Joint Care Orthopedic Associates of Windham County — which includes Scott Green, DO; Kevin Reagan, MD; Biren Chokshi, MD; and Daniel George, MD — are seeing patients at this location. They join the existing team of orthopedics specialists that includes Rob O’Connor, MD; and Stephen Scarangella, MD.

Expanding orthopedics offerings at Windham has been a focal point in the past year. The move also expands a partnership Windham forged with The Center for Bone and Joint Care Orthopedic Associates of Windham County earlier in 2017, when the surgeons began to use the Windham Surgery Center and its new RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System for MAKOplasty robotic hip and knee replacement surgery.

“We believe the people of northeastern Connecticut deserve access to top-notch orthopedics care without leaving their community,” said Donna Handley, president of Hartford HealthCare’s East Region, which includes Windham and Backus hospitals.

Also in 2017, Dr. George became the first surgeon to perform spine surgery at Windham in 13 years when he completed a lumbar (lower back) discectomy to remove herniated disc material pressing on a patient’s spinal cord. The surgery was a success and the patient left the hospital just hours later.

Starting in January 2018, Dr. George, along with colleague Dr. Alan Waitze, will be utilizing Excelsius GPS™, a revolutionary robotic navigation technology for spine surgery, to perform lumbar fusions.

“The expansion of surgical options and available specialists, as well as the investment in advanced technology, makes Windham Hospital a hub for orthopedic care in northeastern Connecticut,” Handley noted.

The orthopedic surgeons are all seeing patients at 5 Founders St., Willimantic. For more information, go to www.windhamhospital.org.
