Nicole Dzienis nearly lost her ability to walk after a brutal car accident shattered her spine.

“My friend was texting, and at high speed we hit a car at a red light. I was crushed under the dashboard,” says Nicole. “The guy in front of us came to check on me and said, ‘Are you OK?'”

But Nicole was far from OK.

“The accident caused a catastrophic cervical spinal cord injury,” said Dr. Subramani Seetharama, chief for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Hartford Hospital.

Immediately following the 2008 accident, Nicole had just one goal: to walk again.

And Dr. Seetharama and his colleague, neurosurgeon Dr. Paul Schwartz of the Ayer Neuroscience Institute, knew they could help this determined young woman get back on her feet.
