Some of the most serious medical issues can start as a tiny cut on the heel or toe. For patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol, a small abrasion can quickly turn into a serious wound, resulting in loss of mobility, intense pain, and in the most serious of cases, amputation.

However, advances in science and technology have created new ways to treat wounds before they escalate. The Advanced Wound and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) is staffed with clinicians specializing in the treatment of these wounds using a variety of approaches. The center is now located on the first floor of the New Britain campus near the Highland Street entrance, making access easier and more convenient than ever for patients.

“Our new state-of-the-art wound care center in New Britain will ensure our hospital offers the most advanced therapies, products, and practices to our community,” said Janette Edwards, vice president of operations for Hartford HealthCare’s Central Region. “The new center includes six treatment rooms, allowing us to treat more patients and increase our rate of healing difficult wounds.”

Treatment is often provided on an outpatient basis. Often times, patients are taught to care for their wounds at home and are given information on nutrition and exercise that may aid the healing process and prevent future wounds. Patients with more aggressive non-healing wounds can use specialty devices to care for them at home.

One of the most effective treatment methods the center provides is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which provides the body with the oxygen it needs to heal the wound. While the body is healing, the patient reclines in a personalized oxygen chamber, equipped with its own TV and cable network connections. This type of therapy is also covered by Medicare and most insurance companies.

The new offices on HOCC’s New Britain campus will now be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Advanced Wound and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers are also available at the HOCC Family Health Center in Bristol and MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
