MidState Medical Center in Meriden and The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain are the first Hartford HealthCare hospitals with a way-finding kiosk system for patients and visitors.

“This is an important step in our patient experience journey,” said Dr. Jeff Finkelstein, vice president of medical affairs for Hartford HealthCare’s Central Region and the leader of the way-finding project. “When patients enter our doors, they may feel overwhelmed. This new system will help them confidently reach their destination using step-by-step directions without the need to ask for help or decipher a map.”

To start, there will be one way-finding kiosk in the main lobby at the Hospital of Central Connecticut and one each at the main entrance, the Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute entrance and the medical office building entrance on the MidState campus. Users can select their destination by simply tapping the map or by typing their destination into a search bar for directions that are printable right at the kiosk. Users can also text or email their map and directions to their smart phone. The kiosks display large, colorful interior maps with landmarks, as well as the campus parking areas.

The new system has a few key features:

  • Patients can follow a link provided by their doctor’s office to print step-by-step directions before they arrive on campus.
  • Directions are offered in English, Spanish, and Polish.
  • There is a handicap button on the kiosk, which reorganizes the interface experience for easier access.

“We are excited about this roll out and will continue to evaluate this product and make updates as we receive feedback,” said Finkelstein.

A web and mobile version will be available in the near future.
