Fireworks are the culmination of most, if not all, Independence Day celebrations in the United States.

Setting off fireworks yourself can be a fun and exciting way to end a holiday evening. If not handled properly, however, they do come with serious risks of harm to people and property.

“We see a lot of burns and concussion or explosion injuries affecting the hands. We see eye injuries,” Backus Hospital chief of emergency services Dr. Kyle McClaine told the Norwich Bulletin.

Combine fireworks with alcohol, and you have a potentially deadly situation.

“Always have a single responsible adult who’s not intoxicated” handle setting off fireworks, McClaine told the Bulletin.
