Dr. Ajay Kumar, the chief of the Department of Medicine at Hartford Hospital, has been named vice president of medical affairs for the Hartford Region effective Jan. 1, replacing Dr. Jack Greene, who will retire at the end of the year.

Dr. Kumar came to Hartford HealthCare in 2011 as chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine at Hartford Hospital. He previously worked at The Cleveland Clinic, where he was vice quality review officer, medical director of the clinic’s IMPACT Center (Internal Medicine Preoperative Center) and medical director of the Quality and Safety Institute. He founded Cleveland Clinic’s first Blood Management program.

At Hartford Hospital, Ajay has led with integrity and accountability and has focused his efforts on mentoring others. He is devoted to continuous quality improvement and has a unique, analytical approach to problem solving – designed to achieve breakthrough performance.

Jack Greene is a tough act to follow, but Ajay brings his own skills, experience and energy to this new role at a time of rapid change in the healthcare industry. His leadership style and collaborative approach will be big assets in his work with a wide range of teams to remove unnecessary variation across our clinical services and deliver consistently high-quality care.

A graduate of Bangalore Medical College in India, he did post-graduate medical training in the United Kingdom and a residency at the Case Western Reserve University program at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland. He is completing an MBA at MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
