The Hartford HealthCare Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital moves into a new $150 million facility in December, prepared for the anticipated spike in fractures, joint replacements and sports injuries of an aging, and increasingly active, population.
The centerpiece five-story building, with a dramatic, sculptural exterior, will include a 150,000-square-foot inpatient hospital linked by a pedestrian bridge to a 86,000-square-foot ambulatory center.

The hospital, with 10 operating rooms and 60 beds, also will provide orthopedic urgent care, diagnostics, imaging and a wellness-rehabilitation center. The three-story, 35,000-square-foot ambulatory center will include five ambulatory surgery rooms and offices for orthopedics, rheumatology and neurosciences.

“This expansion will allow [us] to meet a new era in healthcare,” says Dr. Courtland Lewis, the Bone & Joint Institute’s physician in chief. “Every professional in the institute, from anesthesiologists to radiologists, will be exclusively trained in musculoskeletal care where they can share best practices centered on the patient. The end result is improving access to quality care, while reducing costs and keeping patients healthy.”
