Cataracts are the natural clouding of the lenses of the eyes that typically occur with age.

Hartford Hospital ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Solinsky has details on the latest advancements in laser cataract surgery, including Verion and ORA/VerifEye technologies.

Q: Tell us about the Verion and ORA/VerifEye technology for cataract surgery.
A: The Verion and ORA/VerifEye technologies work together so that surgeons may more precisely plan and execute an individual patient’s cataract procedures. The Verion system is a high-technology Global Positioning System (GPS) that allows surgeons to map out the most accurate plan for an individual’s cataract surgery. The ORA/VerifEye technology enables cataract surgeons at the hospital to verify the most precise lens implant for the patient. This reduces the need for glasses in the post-surgical timeframe.

Q: How does the procedure work?
A: The Verion technology takes digital photos of the patient’s eye in the office. This is electronically transported to the laser and microscope. As soon at the cataract is removed, the ORA/VerifEye system measures the eye thousands of times to verify the exact lens implant that is best for this particular patient. Once the new lens is placed in the eye, ORA verifies the best position and orientation of the new lens implant.

Q: Who are the best candidates for the procedure?
A: Every cataract patient can benefit from the accuracy of the Verion and ORA/VerifEye technologies. The best patient candidates are those with difficult-to-measure eyes, such as those with dense cataracts and previous Lasik surgery.

Patients choosing to correct their astigmatism or opting for multifocal lenses would also benefit from the greater accuracy.

Q: What can patients expect after the procedure?
A: Patients can expect greater precision that will reduce their need for glasses after recovery.
