Hartford HealthCare has appointed Dr. John Grady-Benson as Physician-in-Chief of the Hartford HealthCare Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital. He begins his role today.

An accomplished orthopedic surgeon and respected leader, Dr. Grady-Benson will be instrumental in the continued growth of the Bone & Joint Institute. Working collaboratively with healthcare providers, he is inspired to focus his efforts on continuous quality care improvements, outcomes that matter most to patients, and musculoskeletal research, education, and innovation.

Dr. Grady-Benson began his medical career at Hartford Hospital in 1985, completing his post-graduate training there after Northwestern Medical School. A member of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford since 1996, Dr. Grady-Benson has served as the Director of Research and then most recently as Quality Officer at the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute at St. Francis. He has extensive experience in joint replacement and orthopedic trauma surgery.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Grady-Benson back to our organization where we can benefit from his passion for patient care and his expertise in collaborative data collection.

His vision is to create a system of musculoskeletal care that is about more than fixing joints and bones. Through team collaboration and creative collisions of ideas, that vision is centered on using data analytics to transform the patient experience and improve patients’ health and well-being.

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Dr. Grady-Benson is a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University and was President of his medical school class at Northwestern University. He completed an internship in general surgery at Hartford Hospital and an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Connecticut. In 1990, he completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Adult Reconstruction at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in San Diego.

Dr. Grady-Benson started his professional orthopedic career at the University of Michigan, where he was a joint-replacement specialist from 1991 to 1995. In 1996, he returned to San Diego prior to joining Orthopedic Associates of Hartford and the clinical faculty at the University of Connecticut.
