Backus Trauma Center Reverified as Level III Facility

The Trauma Center at Backus Hospital has been reverified as a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The achievement recognizes the center’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.

David Coletti, MD, director of Trauma at Backus Hospital, said being “trauma strong” is a reflection of how the hospital cares for patients as a whole.

“If you are prepared for trauma, your operating room is more prepared for complex surgery, and your critical care unit is prepared for challenging trauma patients,” said Dr. Coletti.

Established by the ACS in 1987, the Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

The verification process includes a rigorous two day, on-site review of trauma cases, processes, staff education and other areas from pre-hospital to follow-up care to ensure that the center meets ACS standards for trauma care practice.

Backus Trauma Program Manager Renée Malaro, MSN, RN, said the designation means that there are also robust education initiatives and training for staff and a significant amount of community prevention programs offered by the hospital.

“From our trauma registry and the trauma work that we do, we identify the most common causes of trauma injuries in our community. We then focus on those areas and create programs that really target prevention,” Malaro said.

While the Backus Trauma Center is well-equipped to treat a wide range of injuries including significant abdominal and orthopedic trauma, both Dr. Coletti and Malaro agree that elderly falls are the most rapidly growing area of concern.
