Robots have received a warm welcome from patients and staff at The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Operating Room. The Torrington hospital has recently joined the ranks of leading hospitals in the field of robotic guidance with the purchase of a revolutionary robotic navigation platform from Globus Medical called ExcelsiusGPS.

This technology is designed to improve safety and accuracy within the operating room and provides improved visualization of patient anatomy throughout the surgical procedure. It is designed to streamline the surgical workflow and reduce radiation exposure to surgeons and staff, and is the world’s first technology to combine a rigid robotic arm and full navigation capabilities into one adaptable platform for accurate trajectory alignment in spine surgery.

“The device allows us to perform spine surgery with incredible precision,” said Dr. Mitchell Garden, orthopedist who now uses the technology for some spine surgeries. “It is designed specifically to make surgery safer and help surgeons ensure implant and hardware placement are even more precise. Minimally invasive procedures using robotic guidance can mean less blood loss, less muscle damage, and faster recovery. We look forward to promoting less invasive procedures through this technology.”

The Globus ExcelsiusGPS can be used to assist the surgeon with the conditions that would require spinal fusion, including degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, fractures and spinal tumors. Patients with these conditions often suffer with debilitating symptoms like low back pain, leg pain, sciatica, uneven legs, hips or shoulders, abnormal gait and breathing difficulties when the ribcage puts pressure on the lungs.

“At Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, we are committed to providing the safest and latest technology for our patients and staff,” said Dan McIntyre, Hartford HealthCare’s Senior Vice President of the Northwest Region and CHH President. “We look forward to the exciting opportunities and undoubtable impact that robotic guidance technology will offer surgeons performing spine surgery right here in Torrington.”

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital specialists are skilled in caring for various spinal injuries and conditions with nonsurgical and surgical approaches, including those using the Globus ExcelsiusGPS guidance system.
