During the recent snow storm, Katelyn Marullo, RN, BSN, clinical resource leader on Pavilion B at MidState Medical Center, spotted Melissa Dibble, RN, MSN, CAPA, going beyond her normal routine as a clinical resource educator to pass out trays in the short-staffed hospital kitchen. That inspired Marullo to volunteer, too.

“It’s a wonderful thing to help out your peers and put yourself in someone else’s shoes,” said Marullo. “We all know what it’s like to be in a department that is short staffed, so a helping hand goes a long way.”

Marullo found Food Services team leader Ryan Nadeau and volunteered to spend the lunch hours helping in the cafeteria. Nadeau was thankful for the help and rearranged the staff team to include her. After receiving a hair net from the Food Services department, Marullo spent the next hour and a half, during the cafeteria’s busiest time period, serving food to employees, patients and visitors.

“I had a lot of fun helping, seeing a lot of familiar faces and trying to increase meatloaf sales,” said Marullo. “I wouldn’t hesitate to help again. It was a pleasure.”
