Camelia Lawrence,MD, Breast Surgeon, THOCC, Cancer Center,

Once you have suffered the loss of a loved one to breast cancer, the battle against the disease can become very personal – even if you are a physician.

“I have had friends and colleagues diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Camelia  Lawrence, MD, a breast surgeon and new Director of Surgery for the Breast Center in Hartford HealthCare’s Central Region, which includes The Hospital of Central Connecticut and MidState Medical Center.  “It is virtually impossible today to not know someone who has been impacted by the disease.”

That’s one of the reasons Dr. Lawrence is representing the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at the Susan G. Komen Greater Hartford More Than Pink Walk on Saturday, June 9, at  Bushnell Park in Hartford. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and opening ceremonies and the walk begin at 9 a.m. The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute is a sponsor of the event.

Dr. Lawrence has been involved with Komen for many years, and recently accepted an invitation to join its board.

“The Susan G. Komen race is an inspirational, uplifting and encouraging event that brings the community together and provides me with hope that a cure may be found soon,” she said.  Every day, Susan G. Komen makes a positive difference in the lives of women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families.”
